The Federal Government through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that the forthcoming national ID card will be distributed to applicants in a way bereft of the stress encountered when applying for previous IDs.
It was noted that applicants can request their cards, linked with their NIN (National Identification Number), via the self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or through their respective banks as there is a collaboration with the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS).
This innovative initiative will employ the AFRIGO card scheme, a domestic system backed by NIBSS, guaranteeing efficiency and reliability in card distribution. Additionally, cardholders will have the option to collect their cards from specified centers or choose delivery to their preferred location, albeit at an extra cost borne by the applicants.
Also, the NIMC shared via their X handle, @nimc_ng, facts that Nigerians should note about the new ID which has additional features that separates it from the National Identification Number (NIN) that many Nigerians currently have.
Below are some of the seven interesting facts about the new multipurpose card:
1. The new National ID Card is a single, convenient, and General multipurpose card (GMPC) , eliminating the need for multiple cards—not three.
2. The single GMPC has multiple use cases: Payments/Financial, Government intervention/services, travel, etc
3. The National Identity Management Commission is working with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System to deliver the payment and financial use cases.
4. The card will be powered by the AFRIGO card scheme, an indigenous scheme powered by NIBSS.
5. Applicants for the card will have to request with their NIN through the self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks
6. The card will be issued through the applicants’ respective banks in line with existing protocols with the issuance of the Debit/Credit cards.
