Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke has met with the management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) over the lingering poor supply of electricity to the people of Osun.
The Governor revealed this in a post via his X handle, in which he revealed that the complaints of the citizens of his state necessitated the meeting, and he has further invited the team to come to Osun for further dialogue and action.
“While in Ibadan for a private engagement, I convened a meeting with the Managing Director of @IBEDC_NG due to numerous complaints regarding the worsening power supply situation across Osun state,” the post partly read.
Issues raised during the meeting included:
1) Irregular power supply, with some communities experiencing prolonged outages for months.
2) Low metering of consumers, resulting in unfair estimated billing practices that exploit consumers.
3) Outdated meters leading to predominantly analog credit purchasing.
4) Allegations of consumer extortion related to the procurement of transformers.
“I emphasized to the delegation that Osun is a crucial stakeholder in the Nigerian power sector, with our state capital hosting the Transmission National Control Centre. Therefore, it is unacceptable for Osun State to experience inconsistent power supply, which negatively impacts local businesses and contributes to insecurity.
“As the governor, I have already engaged with the Speaker of our state assembly, Rt Honorable @AOEgbedun who was also present at the meeting, regarding the necessity of enacting Osun Electricity system law.
The Governor also disclosed the steps that would be taken by his administration to improve Power Supply to the people of Osun.
“Additionally, we will establish a power sector regulatory agency and explore off-grid options while expanding alternative energy sources,” he stated.
“This interface is a call to action for urgent measures to address the dire situation, as it has become unbearable for our people.
“I have invited @IBEDC_NG to Osun State to expedite action,” concluded the statement.
